Getting started
What do I need?
A computer that uses Chrome or Edge as its browser, along with a digital piano or a MIDI keyboard connected with a USB cable. If you don’t have the cable, Keystair can still listen through your computer’s microphone, or you can play using the keys on the computer itself.
How do I connect my piano?
Plug the piano’s USB cable into the computer and turn the piano on. After that, click Connect piano at the top of the screen and grant MIDI access if the browser requests it; once connected the first time, Keystair will find your piano automatically.
Which browsers work?
Chrome, Edge, and Opera can link up with a piano on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebooks, and Firefox will do so too if you give it permission. Safari and the browsers on iPhone and iPad currently don’t support connecting to a piano via cable; however, the microphone option works there.
Can I use a phone or tablet?
Yes, with the microphone: set the phone near your piano, and it hears one note at a time best. You can also tap the keys on screen. Android phones with Chrome can connect a piano by cable too, with a USB adapter. For chords and hands-together lessons, a computer with the piano plugged in works best.
I don’t have a cable.
Turn on the microphone in Settings, Piano. It works best with just one note at a time and a quiet room. You can also play on the computer keys: A S D F G H J K are the white keys and W E T Y U are the black keys. Z takes you down an octave, while X moves it up by one.
Lessons and practice
How does the path work?
The lessons are arranged in order, and each one ends with a check. Passing it opens the next lesson, and three stars means you’ve mastered it.
What are slow, medium, and full speed?
Pieces played with a click begin at a slower pace. As you pass one speed level, the next becomes available, and passing at full speed masters the piece.
Why do old lessons come back?
The things you’ve learned return as brief warm-ups spread out over the days, so they stick in your memory. After a long pause, Keystair might reopen a recent lesson for a quick refresher.
My notes are marked late or early.
Try the timing check in Settings, Piano. It measures any gap between the click and your playing, then makes up for it.
Your account
Do I need an account?
No. If you don’t have one, your progress will stay on this computer only. With a free account, though, it’s safer and you can continue where you left off from any computer.
How do I sign in?
Using the email and password from when you created your account. The username is simply the name displayed by the app.
I forgot my password.
Use Forgot your password on the sign-in page, and we’ll send you an email with a link to create a new one. The email is sent to the address you use for signing in.
Can I download or delete my data?
Yes. Under Settings, Account, you’ll find the options Download my data and Delete account.
Reminders and the app
How do reminders work?
Choose a practice time under Settings, Practice, and turn on notification reminders. On any day you haven’t practiced by that time, Keystair sends you a notification.
Can I install Keystair?
Yes. For Chrome or Edge, click the install button found in the address bar or use the browser’s menu. On an iPhone or iPad, tap Share and then Add to Home Screen; those devices only show reminders for apps added this way.
