Terms of Use

The basics

These terms are an agreement between you and Jude Hilgendorf, who operates Keystair. Using Keystair means you’re agreeing to these terms, so if you disagree, please don’t use it.

Who can use Keystair

You must be 13 or older to use Keystair. If you’re younger than 18, have a parent or guardian go over these terms with you.

Your account

Keep your password secure, and let us know if you suspect anyone else has gotten into your account, since you’re responsible for what happens in it. Each account is intended for just one person. Avoid usernames that pretend to be someone else or are offensive; we might change or remove such names.

Using Keystair

Keystair is meant for your own learning. Please don’t:

• try to tamper with the site, overload it, or find ways around its security,
• access other people’s accounts,
• copy lessons in large quantities or publish them elsewhere,
• use bots to create new accounts or send messages, or
• use Keystair for any illegal activities.

The music and the lessons

The music in Keystair is from the public domain, but the lessons, arrangements, words, layout, and code belong to us. Feel free to use them to learn, though not to redistribute or sell them.

What you send us

Messages you send us belong to you. We get to read and save them to help reply to you and improve Keystair. If you share ideas, we might use them but won’t owe you anything in return.

Plans and payment

Stage 1 is free of charge, permanently. The stages after it need a paid plan: monthly, yearly, or lifetime. The cost of each plan is listed upfront, and payments are managed by Stripe.

Free trials

The yearly plan starts with a free trial, of the length shown when you sign up. You’ll be billed when the trial ends if you don’t cancel beforehand. Each person gets just one trial.

Renewing and cancelling

Until you cancel, monthly and yearly plans renew automatically at the close of each billing period, charging the price shown when you bought the plan. You can cancel at any time in Settings, Account, Manage billing. You keep the plan for the period you’ve already paid for, and it doesn’t renew after that.

When a plan ends, the lessons you mastered while you had it stay open, along with the songs and workouts they opened.

Refunds

Within 14 days of your first payment for a plan, you can get all your money back by writing to us through the contact page. Once that window is over, refunds aren’t given unless the law requires them. When a refund is issued, the plan ends right then.

Price changes

If the price of your plan changes, we’ll notify you at least 30 days before your next bill at the new rate, so you have time to cancel if you’d like.

Lifetime

A lifetime plan is one upfront payment that covers all present and future lessons while Keystair continues to operate.

As it is

We try to keep Keystair running smoothly and free of errors, but it’s provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind. We can’t promise it will always be up or never make a mistake, and it isn’t a substitute for a piano teacher.

Practice safely

Take breaks and stop if your hands, wrists or arms feel pain. Make sure the volume isn’t too loud, particularly when using headphones.

Limits on liability

As far as the law allows, we aren’t liable for any indirect or consequential damages or for lost data, and our total liability to you for anything to do with Keystair is capped at $50. Some places might not permit limits like these, so not all of them may apply to you.

Ending

You can remove your account at any time in Settings, Account. We might suspend or close an account if it violates these terms, and we could also alter Keystair or stop operating it. If we decide to shut it down, we’ll give notice beforehand when we can, so you have a chance to download your data.

Changes to these terms

When these terms are updated, the date at the top changes to match. For major revisions, we’ll tell you in the app before they take effect; by continuing to use Keystair afterward, you agree to the updated terms.

The law

These terms are governed by the laws of Michigan, United States, and any disputes are settled in Michigan’s courts. Nothing here takes away protections you have under local laws that can’t be waived.
